KDF Shower Filters

No More Bathing In Chlorine

What’s Inside?

How Important Is A KDF Shower Filter To Your Family?

Many people who buy a water filter or water ionizer to treat their drinking water are now beginning to ask about shower filters.

You may wonder why you need to treat water that you will not be drinking?

The surprising answer is that far more contaminants are absorbed during showering then by drinking water.

More chlorine is absorbed during the average shower than by
drinking six to eight glasses of water. Additional chlorine is contained within
the water vapor that enters the air as steam, and is breathed into our
lungs as we shower.

When showering, hot water opens the pores and chlorine and other contaminants are absorbed through the skin.

The effectiveness of the nicotine patch is a good example of the effectiveness of trans dermal delivery. Contaminants are absorbed through the skin the same way, only they bypass the digestive system and go directly into the blood stream.

Another area of concern is the inhalation of fumes. In the shower stall, the hot water produces steam in a confined area making it easy to inhale chlorine and other waterborne gases, such as radon.

Radon is a concern for customers whose water is supplied from underground sources, such as wells. However, it is not a concern for customers’ whose water comes from a surface supply, such as lakes, rivers and reservoirs. That’s because radon is released into the air before it arrives at the tap.

When water that contains radon is used in the home for showering, washing dishes and cooking, radon gas escapes from the water into the air. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency bulletin breathing high levels of radon over a period of time is suspected of causing some types of cancer.

Chlorine and other water contaminants reduce the effectiveness of many shampoos, conditioners, lotions, oils & skin creams, leaving your skin and hair dry and unnourished, and money spent on quality personal care products, wasted.

Above and beyond all health considerations, shower filters are helpful beauty aids for customers. Shower filters, instead of working like cosmetics to cover up or topically treat skin problems, solve the problem at the source by removing many of the pollutants that can cause skin problems.

With the removal of chlorine, hydrogen sulfide and other chemicals, dry skin and harsh effects on hair and scalp and the dryness is gone. Customers who dye their hair may find that the color remains true initially and for a longer period of time because of the removal of chlorine, which acts as an oxidizer of the coloring in hair.

What Is KDF?

Kinetic Degradation Fluxion (KDF) is a high-purity copper-zinc formulation that uses a basic chemical process known as redox (oxidation/reduction) to remove chlorine, lead, mercury, iron, and hydrogen sulfide from water supplies.

The process also has a mild anti-bacterial, algaecitic, and fungicitic, effect and may reduce the accumulation of lime scale.

The technology was developed by KDF Fluid Treatment, Inc. in the mid 1980s and was patented in 1987. KDF filter media meets EPA and Food and Drug Administration standards for levels of zinc and copper in potable water, and is certified by NSF International to its Standard 61 for drinking water.

How Does a KDF Filter Work?

The KDF redox process works by exchanging electrons with contaminants. This “give and take” of electrons converts many contaminants into harmless components. During this reaction, electrons are transferred between molecules, and new elements are created. Some harmful contaminants are changed into harmless components. Others are electrochemically bound to the KDF media.

Free chlorine, for instance, is changed into benign, water-soluble chloride salt, which is then carried harmlessly through the water supply. Many heavy metals such as copper, lead, mercury and others, react and bond with the KDF medium’s surface, thus being effectively removed from the water supply.

What Contaminants Does KDF Remove?

KDF process media works to reduce or remove chlorine, iron, hydrogen sulfide, lead, mercury, magnesium, and chromium. It may also inhibit the growth of bacteria, algae, and fungi. Redox media removes up to 98% of water-soluble cations (positively-charged ions) of lead, mercury, copper, nickel, chromium, and other dissolved metals.

Removal depend on many factors, generally more than 98% of chlorine is removed in home water treatments, though this reduces to over 90% due to shower filters with high flow rates.

Why is KDF used in Shower Water Filters?

KDF is frequently found in home showerhead filters because of its effectiveness at higher operating temperatures and flow rates.
